The term freeroll is also used to describe a tournament with no entry fee but the use of the terms free and no entry fee can be misleading because some freerolls require a payment at some point to gain entry to the tournament. Freerolls at Internet poker sites should not be confused with their close counterpart - play money tournaments. Freerolls are different from play-money tournament in two respects. Play money tournament usually require the payment of play money and the tournament winnings are play money. Freeroll tournaments can be genuinely free, may require a payment of points, or on some occasions require a deposit of funds into the player's account. The winnings are either real money, points, merchandise or entry tickets to other tournaments.

I made my original bankroll in a freeroll at PDC Poker ( then Poker.com). There was a time delay in releasing the funds - about a week, but I got to keep and transfer the money without having to deposit any of my own funds. Not sure if this is still their policy, but for new players it is worth checking out.
