Often home games start with one limit and by the end of the night the limit has grown. I found these tips from Doyle Brunson's "Poker Wisdom of a
Champion" and thought they made good sense for deciding when raising the limit would best help yourslef. Here are some fairly absolute rules you should consider 1. When an average player is in a limit higher than feels comfortable to him, he will usually play tighter than he should. This means, you'll make money by bluffing him. 2. When an average player is in a limit lower than he's accustomed to, he will usually play looser and far below his capabilities. This is why many superior players will lose consistently when killing time at lower limits. 3. When a very loose player is forced to play higher stakes than he feels comfortable playing, he often becomes a much better player. That's because, very often, he stops playing hopeless hands and ends up playing almost appropriately. 4. When a very tight player is forced to player higher stakes than he feels comfortable playing, he usually becomes even tighter. This is to your advantage since you can usually run over too-tight players. By forcing them to play bigger you are magnifying their faults. 5. If a game is very loose, it usually works against you to raise the limits. You should often keep the limits low and play conservatively. 6. If a game is very tight, it usually works in your favor to raise the limits and play aggressively. |
