The best "tell" online is bet sizing. Most players will fall into a very predictable pattern. Here are a couple of common ones:

Massive overbet / all in. Probably the most common one. Most novice players will never shove all in with a great hand on the river. They'll sucker bet (make a bet they think is small enough that you will call). Conversely, there are a LOT of new players whose all in screams bluff.

1/3rd or 1/2 of the pot size bet. Say there is $10 in the pot, they'll bet $3 to $5 on the river, hoping you'll dump your hand unless it's at least fairly decent. With a smaller bet like this, it doesn't have to work that much to show an overall profit.

If you pay attention and take good notes, you'll be amazed at the betting patterns you can begin picking up on your opponents over time. Imagine how well you could play against a player if you knew that 90% of the time he was going to do the following with these hands:

Raise the minimum with AA or KK. Raise 5x the big blind with AK/QQ/JJ. All in with TT or 99. Limp with pairs 8 and under, and suited connectors. Throw away most other hands.

If you can nail a guy down to his starting hands based on his bet sizes, he's practically playing you with his cards face up!

If your opponent check down until the river and the flop is 8QJQ8 and he bet about 10xBB, he's probably bluffing. You must just study the play and have the good feelings for good decisions

There is an old saying I like. It goes something like this. "If you can't spot the dead money in your first half hour at the table, it's because it's you". What this means is, if you pay close attention you can usually determine who likes to bluff or semi-bluff on weak hands fairly quickly. You can then use this info to take down the pots where you do, in fact, have the best hand. And conversley you can also fold your questionable hands when going up against the tight players at your table.

Very quickly, I would just like to say too. Though it really goes without saying. Even once you have spotted the dead money. They can still get lucky, and you still lose. So good luck.

true true...but the percentage of winning for a better player is higher than that of a lucky donk so keep with the gut instinct
