Default #1 mistake in poker

This one is pretty obvious, but yet it's still the most frequent mistake, even by players who know this fact!

Playing too many hands is the #1 mistake in poker. For players who play 9 and 10 handed tables, you'll only see about 2 out of 10 flops if you're playing good starting hands.

There's a ton more strategy to utilize to be a winning poker player, but finding a good starting hands chart is a great place to start.

P.S. If you don't have a good idea of what hands to play in poker, feel free to ask. I'd be happy to turn this thread into a "what hands are good in what position" thread.

i agree except that when u have a chip lead ...u have to play most of em to attain max. chips but not to risk dumb bets or frivulous bluffs

Good point brinx. In the case of tournaments, if you're a big chip leader, it's important to pressure your opponents by raising with more hands than you would normally play.

Jamie Gold's WSOP main event win in 2006 was a good example of big stack bully play.

I also agree with that. Seeing 20% of the flops is about right. If your playing quality hands. I would however add, that if you like to play some weaker hands (small suited connectors) when position allows, that number will be a little higher.
